The Cornerstone Courses

Your first year is structured around four Cornerstone courses that lay a foundation in the four core competencies that every Minerva student develops: thinking critically, thinking creatively, communicating effectively, and interacting effectively.

These courses introduce fundamental concepts, habits, and skills that are applied across disciplines and reinforced throughout your four years.

Cornerstone courses:

Formal Analyses

Focus on thinking critically through in-depth training in logic, statistics, and algorithmic thinking, using formal, computational, and quantitative approaches to formulate, analyze, and tackle problems.

Multimodal Communications

Learn to communicate effectively at a high-level and deeply analyze communications of various forms. You will form the skills and practical experience to write, speak publicly, communicate visually, design, debate, and express yourself artistically.

Empirical Analyses

Develop your creative thinking skills and familiarize yourself with methods used in social and natural sciences that teach you to effectively frame problems, identify solutions, develop and test hypotheses, design research studies, and reach plausible conclusions.

Complex Systems

Explore how humans function as members of various systems, using concepts such as multiple causality and multi-factor integrations. This course will develop your ability to interact effectively by participating in group project collaboration, negotiation, leadership, and formal debate.

Course Materials

Most course materials for the MDA and CDA are open source or available through the Minerva library databases. There may be occasions where you need to buy a book or access an article but those costs are minimal and expected to be under $100 for the entire program.

Supporting Students Around the World in Minerva’s Global Rotation Cities

Ongoing student health, safety, and wellbeing are central to Minerva’s global model. Each student’s city experience every semester is supported by local staff, structured protocols, and resources designed to help students navigate new environments with confidence.

Before students depart, Minerva provides pre-departure guidance and orientation to help them prepare for living and learning in a new city. Upon arrival, students participate in a three-day mandatory local orientation program (“Elevation”) that introduces city-specific resources, student community and experiential programming, community expectations and opportunities, health services (including local doctor, hospital and mandatory health insurance usage, local transportation protocols and advice, visa management and city safety guidance.

Across all locations, students have access to:

Local Student Life staff who can provide support and assistance, including live-in residential life staff in most locations

City-specific health and safety guidance

Emergency response protocols and planning, including a mandatory safety app that all students are required to download, install and register with (Aerogami)

24/7 emergency contact resources, including a city staff-managed emergency phone number

Support navigating healthcare and local services, including routine and emergency medical care and local connections to hospitals and clinics who specialize in working with Minerva students and their health insurance.

Ongoing wellbeing and community support, including same or next-day mental health appointments (in-person or online) through Minerva’s Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) team and local counselors where necessary. CAPS services do not require any health insurance usage.

Students also receive guidance tailored to each city (both in-person and via Minerva’s student intranet), including key information about local neighborhoods, transportation, healthcare access, emergency procedures, and cultural context, as well as access to highly localized and personalized experiential programming, including Civic Projects, City Experiences and volunteer activities.

Minerva maintains comprehensive emergency management processes across all global locations and regularly updates protocols and guidance to support student wellbeing. All students must register for and install Aerogami for on-site/localized resources and emergency communications with the local Student Life team; in addition, Minerva maintains detailed Emergency Management Plans and Crisis Management Plans for all operational rotation locations, which are made available to students, faculty and staff alike.

Working alongside researchers, startups, nonprofits, corporations, and public institutions, students apply their skills to real-world challenges while building professional experience and networks.

Mohamed Yousry ElSadec (M24)

Mohamed combined research opportunities at Minerva with an external internship experience, building expertise at the intersection of biology and computation at National Taiwan University in Taipei. He went on to become a PhD Candidate in Bioinformatics at Boston University.

Dimitar Ivanov (M25)

As a Minerva student, Dimitar conducted research with the Brain and Consciousness Lab at National Taiwan University in Taipei, gaining hands-on experience in neuroscience research. He later continued his research journey through an internship with the Oregon National Primate Research Center and is now pursuing a PhD in Neuroscience at Harvard.

Isabele Vitório (M22)

Isa studied galaxy clusters and binary stars through a research mentorship with faculty at Maulana Azad National Urdu University in Hyderabad. The experience connected Minerva students directly with active researchers and helped build a foundation in scientific inquiry and astrophysics. Isa is now pursuing a PhD in Physics at the University of Michigan.

Roujia Wen (M19)

Roujia conducted research at Hanyang University in Seoul, where she used deep neural networks to improve the identification of isolated muons from simulated particle-collision data. She later completed a Master’s degree at Cambridge University and worked at Amazon, before applying her analytical and problem-solving skills to entrepreneurship as a co-founder of Seabound, a climate technology company focused on reducing emissions in the maritime industry.
