MINERVA VOICES

A Conversation with Minerva Student Rue

Incoming Minerva student, Rue, discusses her academic aspirations and favorite accomplishments.

September 26, 2022

How did you discover Minerva?

I discovered Minerva during my junior year in high school. At the time I was taking classes at my local college and all my professors were teaching through lectures. I was sitting in a lecture hall one day thinking that I do not want to do college if it is like this - sitting passively, listening to lectures. From that day on, I started looking into alternative colleges. I went down the list until I found Minerva University, and I fell in love when I first discovered it.

What was your favorite accomplishment that you submitted in your Minerva application?

My favorite accomplishment was submitting my t-shirt design to a Key Club competition. During my junior year, I was a Key Club officer and I volunteered to create the Key Club t-shirt of that year. We sold about 200-250 t-shirts with my design on them. At the end of the year, our club went to a competition for all of the Key Clubs in Texas and in Oklahoma, and we won third place out of about 300 clubs.

What excites you the most about attending Minerva?

I cannot wait to meet my cohort. I am excited to see how Minerva incorporates active learning into their curriculum, and I am very excited to be living in a new city with new people.

What major are you the most interested in pursuing?

I am most interested in Computational Sciences. I cannot say what it will do for me in the future or what career I will be doing just because Computer Science is such a huge field. However, I can say with full confidence that I believe Minerva will help me prepare for whatever is to come, guide me, and allow me to explore what I like and what I do not like.

What is the kind of person that you think should apply to Minerva?

I think a person who is ambitious, curious about the world, and open to new challenges is definitely a perfect match for Minerva. I think as long as you have the heart and the mind to engage with the real world, explore, and your goals align with Minerva's goals, Minerva offers what you want to get out of a college education.

Is there anything else you would like to share?

I am really happy that I chose Minerva University and I have no regrets choosing it. For any prospective students, I would recommend researching Minerva, going through their website, and trying to imagine yourself there. Can you imagine yourself living in the dorms or traveling as often as we do? Can you see yourself studying on a computer or making very nomadic and minimalist lifestyle choices or doing academics at Minerva? Think about all those aspects. The more that you can see yourself there, the more I think you should consider applying.

If you were inspired by Rue's story and are seeking a college experience that will teach you valuable pragmatic skills that will enable you to change the world, apply to join Minerva today.
