MINERVA VOICES

How Siblings Robin and Sofia Found Their Own Paths at Minerva

Meet siblings and Minerva alumni Sofia and Robin from Mexico.

April 16, 2025

Sofia and Robin’s Minerva journey began with their mother, who first discovered the university. Sofia, Class of 2022, hadn’t thought much about college until Robin, Class of 2021, started Minerva. With just a year between them, she felt pressure to apply but initially hesitated, fearing comparisons and rejection. It wasn’t until Robin returned home for winter break, sharing his experiences and encouragement, that she seriously considered it. Exploring the world while studying sounded incredible, so she decided to take the leap.

Robin, on the other hand, was initially intimidated by Minerva’s unconventional model. But as he learned more, his excitement grew, and after getting accepted, he didn’t even complete his other applications.

Sofia was proud when Robin got in, but she missed having him close. Robin, meanwhile, was both proud and a little worried when Sofia got accepted. He knew she would thrive but also understood the challenges she would face.

Having a sibling at Minerva made transitions smoother for Sofia. She knew what to expect and had Robin’s guidance, from academic advice to city recommendations. Their time together during the pandemic in London and San Francisco became a highlight, allowing them to share experiences and support each other.

Despite their similarities, their Minerva journeys were distinct. Robin thrived as an independent learner, while Sofia found comfort in structure and routines. Robin sought out nature and adventure, while Sofia enjoyed artsy events, cozy cafes, and museums. Even their food habits evolved differently, with Robin perfecting his biryani while Sofia focused on mastering avocado toast. Gender also shaped their experiences, particularly in airports and conservative regions.

Another key difference was how they built friendships. Sofia formed strong bonds by supporting others, while Robin took longer to connect, often finding his closest friendships through music and Minerva events.

Looking back, both agree that community was the most valuable part of Minerva. Sofia loved the diversity of her cohort and the sense of belonging among people who shared her curiosity and drive. Robin emphasizes how the people he met broadened his worldview. “Minerva was the first place where I felt seen for who I was and what I cared about, rather than just for my grades.”

Traveling the world while being surrounded by an inspiring community shaped them both in unexpected ways. From problem-solving skills to lifelong friendships, Minerva became more than just a university—it became a defining chapter in their lives. And despite their different paths, one thing remained constant: their bond as siblings, strengthened by shared adventures and the privilege of experiencing the world together.

If you were inspired by Robin & Sofia's story and are seeking a college experience that will teach you valuable pragmatic skills that will enable you to change the world, consider applying to Minerva.
