Lina's Letter from Berlin

Learn all about the Class of 2026' semester in Berlin through Lina's eyes.

Guten Tag from the dynamic streets of Berlin,

Ah, the confidence of seven years of German studies back home... only to be swiftly humbled by the linguistic puzzle that was waiting for me upon landing in Germany. Ordering coffee at the airport became my crash course in the severe disparity between textbook German and the rapid-fire, often stern-sounding reality of the language spoken here. Nevertheless, armed with survival skills I sharpened in Seoul (where two words in Korean seemed to suffice), I braced myself for the linguistic adventure that lay ahead.

Navigating the streets and Kieze (i.e., neighborhoods) of Berlin has been an absolute delight. Each Kiez seems to have its own distinct personality, a vibrant carpet woven from diverse cultures, art, and history. From the hipster vibes of Friedrichshain to the innovative charm of Kreuzberg, every corner reveals a new feature of Berlin's rich personality. Wandering through the cobblestone streets lined with diverse cafes, quirky boutiques, and hidden gems, I've found myself enchanted by the city's undeniable charisma. Whether it's stumbling upon a hidden courtyard adorned with street art or stumbling into a cozy corner cafe filled with lively chatter, every moment feels like a discovery waiting to unfold.

People always talked about the German Döner, but oh my, the hype was real! I found myself indulging in this delicious treat at a pace of three döners a week – a testament to its addictive blend of juicy meat, crisp vegetables, and mouthwatering sauces. And let's not forget the hearty delights of schnitzel, bratwurst, and currywurst, each dish a culinary symphony of flavor that left me craving more.

Amidst the culinary adventures, Berlin's vibrant street art scene has also left a permanent mark on my journey. From the iconic artworks decorating the remnants of the Berlin Wall to the colorful graffiti splashed across every corner, the city itself feels like an ever-evolving canvas of expression. Wandering through neighborhoods like Kreuzberg and Friedrichshain, I've been captivated by the raw creativity and powerful messages conveyed through each brushstroke and spray can.

As for the pulsating beats of techno music, I must confess, it was never quite my cup of tea... until Berlin. The city's rich music opened my ears to a world of electronic rhythms and magnetic melodies, where the pulse of the city seemed to synchronize with the throb of the bassline.

As my classmates and I bid farewell to this captivating city, we carry with us not only the echoes of its streets and the flavors of its cuisine but also the bonds forged through shared experiences.

Warmly,

Lina
